Caucasus Geopolitical Modeling Laboratory
History and Institutional Development
The Caucasus Geopolitical Modeling Laboratory was established in 2012 within the framework of the Caucasus Institute for Regional Security, operating under the Georgian National Committee of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly. A decisive role in the formation of the laboratory was played by the publication of the book “Archipelago Caucasus: Myths and Real Politics”, released in 2010 with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Georgia. The book presents a diversity of centralized and peripheral models of Caucasian formats and dimensions. Its core idea is that the peoples of the Caucasus themselves should have the opportunity to define their own future or actively participate in shaping the future of their region. From this perspective, the publication represents a product of postcolonial scholarly thought. Between 2012 and 2023, the laboratory operated within the academic space of the Caucasus International University. As a result, the first geopolitics-oriented syllabi were developed and implemented at the Faculty of International Relations. During this period, the laboratory’s methodological foundations were formed, substantial research experience was accumulated, and a significant body of analytical output was produced. Since 2024, the Caucasus Geopolitical Modeling Laboratory has been functioning as a structural unit of the International University of Peace.
Mission
The mission of the laboratory is to develop sustainable models of peace, security, and cooperation in the Caucasus region through the application of geopolitical modeling approaches.
