About
Our Vision and Mission
The project “Metacognitive Archaeology: Untapped Opportunities and Strategic Perspectives for the Development of the Gonio-Apsaros Archaeological-Architectural Museum-Reserve” represents a practical approbation of the theoretical framework of Metacognitive Archaeology developed in Georgia.
The initiative is based on an interdisciplinary synthesis of archaeology, historiography, conflict studies, scientific diplomacy, strategic analysis, cultural heritage studies, and cognitive research.
The project aims to develop new research perspectives and explore mechanisms through which cultural heritage may support peacebuilding, cooperation, and democratic cohesion.

Archeology: Conflicts and Problems
The project examines the problem of “archaeological conflicts,” including tensions between archaeologists and local communities, challenges in international academic cooperation, and the impact of urbanization, migration, climate change, and informal economic processes on cultural heritage management.
Metacognitive Archaeology seeks to develop analytical tools and interdisciplinary approaches for understanding and addressing these risks.
What is Metacognitive Archaeology?
Metacognitive Archaeology is an interdisciplinary research framework that considers archaeology not only as a discipline for studying the past, but also as an analytical instrument for understanding knowledge production, narratives, collective memory, and cultural interaction.
The approach integrates archaeology, historiography, geopolitics, cognitive research, cultural diplomacy, and strategic analysis into a unified interdisciplinary space.
The project seeks to explore how cultural heritage can contribute to peacebuilding, international cooperation, and democratic cohesion.

Research Platform — Gonio-Apsaros
The central research platform of the project is the Gonio-Apsaros Archaeological-Architectural Museum-Reserve — a unique historical space where the histories of Colchis, the ancient world, Christianity, geopolitics, and international relations intersect.
Preliminary research has revealed the site's additional scientific and strategic significance both for Georgia and the wider international scholarly community.
